You can never go wrong with a simple, timeless newborn portrait session in your home. I have been working with this amazing family of now seven for several years and they always have the most amazing connection and love for each other, especially Mom and Dad. It's always such a pleasure documenting their latest family milestone. In fact, in last week's blog post, I featured their coastal maternity portrait session on Saint Augustine Beach. A light and airy sunrise maternity photo session with the most amazing dress!
For their in-home newborn session, like I always try to achieve, we opted for a timeless minimalist style. I like to try to keep negative space within my portraits and focus on the connection of the subjects within the frame. I think this is especially important for newborn sessions where you have lots of little details to bottle up. This first image is typically my go-to for an in-home newborn session. I am drawn to the connection here between the three subjects - Mom, Dad and baby. I like to have Mom and Dad touch heads and look down at their newborn baby, portraying a sense of connection and love with a circle between them. I feel like this is symbolic in a way, and in keeping with the tone of a newborn session. After all, this is their newest little addition to the family and he deserves some time away from his siblings on his own to shine!
Whites and neutral clothing lend a timeless quality in which we hope that in a hundred years these newborn portraits will look exactly the same as they do today.
Mom's dress for newborn portrait session is also a rental from Nuuly! I actually have this dress in my client closet and love it. It's such a timeless piece, especially for a newborn photo session. I wanted to create a photograph of the full dress to document the gorgeous beadwork this dress has. And the colors are just perfect for a neutral look. They compliment the warmth of the flooring too.
This image is of course by request, but it was so much fun to create! This is what I'm talking about with this family. They're such a pleasure to work with. So for every child, for every newborn photo session they have had (for every.single.child.) they began a tradition of photographing their newborn baby in their favorite soccer team's jersey (Colombia of course, where their family is originally from). After their first newborn session, way back when their now tween was born, they saved the jersey and said to each other "Well now we have to do this for every child moving forward!" So they did. What makes this even more special too is that they saved the jersey so now little brother is in this photograph in the same jersey that the rest of the children have been photographed in as newborns. How special is that?!
If you're wondering what they're screaming at the camera here, it's "GOAL!!!", of course!
