St. Augustine Beach - An Editorial Style Sunrise Portrait Session

This is one of my favorite sunrise sessions I've done to date! Other than Mom looking like she's come off the runway, I actually loved the weather that morning. It was a little cloudy but still colorful, just soft clean light. It almost looked that morning like a sunset session with the pastel skies and brightly-colored, white sand. <3

My favorite thing about this session was their casual vibe. I wish I could myself show up at sunrise effortless in jeans and a shirt looking like this!

Covid prevented maternity or newborn portraits for this beautiful Mama, so she was determined to make the effort to document the baby stage before it passed. A beautiful pastel sky, an empty beach and simple clothing were all we needed to allow the subjects to shine in these timeless coastal sunrise portraits on St. Augustine Beach. I was so grateful my clients made the effort to come all the way from Jacksonville to shoot here. It makes my day when a family who commissions me for portraits trusts me completely and goes with the flow. It makes all the difference and it shows in the finished product.

This first image (above) is my absolute favorite! I love it equally in color, but there is something so calming and stripped down, so organic, about a simple black and white image. It puts all of the focus on the subjects and makes them pop, especially on the coast at sunrise when you have a lot of negative space. Mom and baby are so beautiful and I imagine decades from now, when little Sunny is a grown man, admiring this image of him and his mother from his desk somewhere, or adorning a bookshelf for her grandchildren to pass by each day. Showing each other and talking about what a beauty their grandmother was, and still is.
