I've worked with this family several times now, and outside of their in-home newborn session, we've always documented their family portraits on the coast. So I was thrilled when Mom opted for historic downtown St. Augustine as the setting for our latest portrait session! Downtown has so many little hidden alcoves and historic nooks all combined within an easy walk from each other, so it makes for an easy photo session for a family with younger children. I like to call it a "stacked location" when I can change up the setting pretty easily within an hour portrait session. Giving lots of variety in a short amount of time and space.
Sunset was the best choice this go-around for a variety of reasons for this family, but I especially loved ending their session near the wharf at sunset. The pastel colors in the sky coordinated beautifully with Mom's choice in clothing for her family. The pale blues and creamy nudes she chose for their outfits complimented the setting sun and the sailboats with perfection. This is definitely a session I'll be sharing in the future for families looking for another option other than the beach!
Aviles Street will forever be a favorite of mine when photographing a family downtown. With it's lively nightlife, historic architecture and colorful buildings, it reminds me a little of Charleston and makes for such a unique setting for a family photo session. Yes, you'll have to dodge some horse-drawn carriages as you take your shot down one of the many historic cobblestone streets, but the charm is totally worth the wait for this native Floridian. I've shot in countless places all over this beautiful state I'm lucky enough to call home, but St. Augustine has my heart for sure.
